Interior Wood Surfaces

Depending on their degree of impact wood surfaces must be protected against  soiling. The different, most frequent treatments will be described here.

Linseed oil is the best protectiong oil for wood. it has an excellent `creeping' ability and wa already used in ancient times to make wood more resistant. Being very thick it was applied hot. Toys, wooden platters and other small things that must be easy to clean by wiping can be well greased with Sehestedt's Herb Lacquer. If the wood is to be impregnated with as much linseed oil as possible, the lacquer linseed oil should be diluted, i.e. a half oil should be produced with lacquer linseed oil and linseed oil thinner or else Sehestedt's Primer Oil can be used.

 Sehestedt's Herb Lacquer

A pure mature lacquer linseed oil with the wood protecting and pleasantly smelling active substances of the guajak-juniper and balmtree and the bark of the neemtree.

The active substances are extracts produced by longer seasoning (at least ½ year) of the finely rasped woods in lacquer linseed oil, a special method of Sehestedt's Natural Colors.
The base for lacquer linseed oil is linseed oil, a drying fat oil, produced from the seeds of flax (linum usitatissimum l.). It contains slime substances that are disadvantageous with many application ranges. Deslimed oil is called lacquer linseed oil. It will dry without any drying agent added in approx. 4 days. Better drying and better running is achieved by cooking and adding metal combinations (approx. 0.4%) as manganese from brown coal and cobalt (neither lead nor barium!)

Linseed oil and lacquer linseed oil need light for drying, so never use it on cabinet interiors. Lacquer linseed oil is particularly suitable for the impregnation of children's toys, wooden platters, low impact wood in interior areas  wanting a saturated colorless finish.
Application: in the past manual workers used to apply lacquer linseed oil hot to allow it to well penetrate the wood.
A 40 - 50% dilution with pure natural turpentine (see Primer Oil) is however better. The lacquer is to be absorbed completely by the wood. Remove unabsorbed product with a lint-free rag to prevent unevenness in the gloss finish or even tacki

Coverage: approx. 10m²/l
Always be sure not to store cleaning rags ,sponges etc. crumpled up while being still wet as there is danger of spontaneous combustion caused by the linseed oil in the product.

Sehestedt's Primer Oil

A `halfoil' from pure lacquer linseed oil and natural oil thinner (40%). Without
the thinner lacquer linseed oil is too thick to penetrate the wood well and
quickly enough. Primer Oil is especially necessary to prepare the wood with a
first oil coat for subsequent treatment with waxes or varnishes. Without this
priming a beeswax coat would produce an uneven surface.
Ingredients: lacquer linseed oil (leadfree), isoaliphate, citrus turpentine.

Coverage: 1.0 l/m²

          Sehestedt's Linseed Oil Thinner

Suitable for thinning all oil containing varnishes, lacquers and glazes as well as for
cleaning equipment after use and removing stains from waxed and oiled
surfaces. Resin-rich and exotic woods should also be rubbed off with the
          thinner before priming.

The thinner is an aliphatic compound (aliphate, Greek: aleiphar = ointment
oil). It is the collective term for organic compounds, thei c-atoms being
arranged in straight or branched chains unlike isocyclical compounds where
the c-atoms form rings (benzole rings). Aliphatic compounds are so equivalent
to acyclic compounds with the subgroups: alkanes, alkenes and alkines i.e.
alcohols (ethanol), carbon acid (acetic acid), fats, soaps, waxes and
others. They are free from carcenogenic substances like toluol or benzole that
are very strong solvents used in the so-called turpentine substitute.
Isoaliphates are mainly produced from mineral oil today but in the future their
production with natural raw materials will be possible. An all round thinner
from isoaliphates needs a 5% addition of natural citrus turpentine that is,
however, free from any carcenogenic substances to improve its solubility.

       Sehestedt's Interior Wood Glaze

A colorless, transparent interior coating producing soil and water resistant
wood, cork and stone surfaces. Not suitable for walking areas. Prevents
coniferous wood from strong darkening and dries even in cabinet interiors
unlike simple lacquer linseed oil. Gives the surface a matt finish and can be
painted over. This product is a combination of linseed oil cookings, Chinese
wood oil (tungoil) and castor oil in a blend of solvents from high-valency
French pine oil, rectified Portugese balsamic turpentine, orange peel
turpentine from Brasil and isoaliphates, silicic acid as matting agent and
       calcium-cobalt-zirconium-octoate as drying substance.

Application: old coats must be removed by sanding or stripping (Scheidel
Stripper, Order Nr. 7010) until no old residue is left. Apply 2 thin coats at an
       interval of 12-24 hours.

       Sehestedt's Linseed Oil Putty

       for interior and exterior use

A linseed oil putty for windows and doors , also for exterior use. Easy to
       sand.

Ingredients: linseed oil and woodoil standoil, resin stand oil, lime resin, dammar
resin, very fine amorphous silicic dioxide, titan dioxide.

       Care of Kitchen Counter Tops

For high impact surfaces as kitchen counter tops or window sills the following
painstaking treatment has been tried and tested.

       1. Generous wet-in-wet application of Primer Oil (order no. 2080) until evenly
saturated. With surfaces exposed to moisture use Primer Oil Preventing Mold
and Blueing (order no.  2081). Remove carefully any unabsorbed product after
           approx. 20-30 minutes.

       2. 24 hours later: sand with 150-grain sandpaper and polish carefully with
           Sehestedt's Tripel Polishing Paste

       3. Apply thin coat of Interior Wood Glaze with rag or brush

       4. Final coat after 24 hours with Interior Glaze (rag) or Care Oil (order ne.
2220) depending on absorbency of the wood-

       5. Subsequent care with Care Oil after cleaning. Do not allow water to stand
           on wooden kitchen counter tops!

For the care of kitchen counter tops we are offering a kit (Art.Nr.2169)
         containing: 0.75 l Primer Oil, 0.2 l Tripel Polishing Paste, 0.2 l Interior Wood
Glaze, 0.2 l Care oil, 1 brush and application instructions.
