Wood Protection
preventive or controlling
Where wood is likely to get moist as under the
roof or in the bathroom, under the floor or outside the house it must be given a
preventive protection with borax against infestation with mold and pest. For interior
woods there is the boron salt-boron acid combination Polybor .....
Sehestedt's Polybor - borax-boron salt blend
Readily soluble salt concentrate according to
DIN 68800 against mold and pest infestation, to be prepared with water.
This special composition of borax and boron acid
without any other additives is absolutely non-toxic even when burning. It is odor- and
colorless.
Exterior Wood Protection
Soluble borax salt should not be used for
exterior wood affected by water. For this purpose there is :
Sehestedt's Primer Oil Preventing Mold and
Blueing
A light oil (linseed oil:turpentine, 50:50%) for
priming wood particularly before a coat of Exterior Glaze , Linseed Oil Varnish and Wood
Oil Varnish (Yacht Varnish) is done to protect it from mold. Coniferous wood is so
protected from blueing.
Ingredients: pure lacquer linseed oil, orange
peel turpentine, isoaliphate, organo-borat. The active substance in the primer is an
organo-borat,excellently protecting exterior wood against all mold. This boron preparation
is not dissolved in water as borax or boron/salt-boron acid combinations but in primer oil
and applied on the dry wood. The wood is then as usual protected against weathering with
varnish or glaze.
Only with a moisture in the wood exceeding 20% a
hydrolysis process will split the organo-borate into boron acid and so prevent a possible
growth of mold. The disadvantage of the traditional borax preparation was that the wood
had to be treated with water soluble borax which endeavoured to come up immediately to the
wood surface. The organo-borate substance however is now fixed in the wood with linseed
oil and will not be activated before it moistens. Unlike borax salt that tended to come up
and be washed away from the surface of the wood the effect of boron acid is long lasting.
`Unlike GB, Australia and New Zealand in Germany boron compounds have very little
importance. They have not yet been able to replace
fluorine salts, traditionally used in wood protection , despite their relatively low
toxicity for Man and mammals and their excellent effect as preventive wood protecting
salt. Due to their safeness boron preparations are not subject to any application
restrictions." (Quotation: Leiße, On pollution of Man and Environment by Wood
Protecting Active Substances in Impregnated Wood, Braunschweig, 1984).
Apart from mold this primer offers a limited
protection against insects.
Permetrin used as wood insecticide has been
called into question very much considering its harmfulness for Man. That is why we are
offering Sehestedt's Neemoil Emulsion instead.
Exterior woods such as windows, doors, garden
furniture, roof shingles i.e. all wood exposed to sun or rain must be treated subsequently
with the following products:
Sehestedt's Linseed/Woodoil Exterior Glaze,
colored
A fat oil for exterior wood needing protection
against rain and sun. Quickly drying, can be painted over. Available in the nordic colors:
pine yellow, Swedish red (oxblood), teak red, Venetian red, moss green, grass green,
Frisian blue, fiord blue, russet and white. Jet black and white , however, are suitable
for interior application only. All colors are intermixable.
Also suitable for subsequent care of objects
treated with other non coating products.
Natural ingredients: standoil of linseed
oil, wood and castor oil, calcium-cobalt-zirconium-octoate as drying agent, soil colors,
mineral or natural iron oxide pigments in a blend of balsamic and citrus turpentine with
isoaliphate and best French pine oil.
Application: The wood must be free from
covering or flaking off coats, otherwise sand down or remove completely, leaving no
residue. Prime with Sehestedt's Primer Oil Preventing Mold and Blueing. After a few hours
apply a sparing coat of Linseed/Woodoil Exterior Glaze , thoroughly stirred before using.
After drying (12-24 hours) apply a second rich coat. High impact areas such as weathered
masonry or windows require a third coat.
Subsequent care: Depending on the degree
of weathering of the old coat renovate every 1-2 years or longer always remembering: the
wood must be protected with oil to prevent penetration of rain and well pigmented to
prevent degradation of the binding agent by ultraviolet radiation. With windows reapply a
new coat only on high impact water sides after one year if necessary.
Sehestedt' Pre-Varnish, for interior and exterior
use
The Pre-Varnish is a covering, white paint for
wood surfaces. It is easy to apply and after 18 hours so hard that it can be sanded over.
This pre-coat paint being relatively poor in oil needs a final coat of linseed oil varnish
(Sehestedt' White Varnish). The Pre-Varnish can also be used as white base for oil glazes
on interior wood.
Ingredients: linseed oil standoil, copal
cooking, silicic dioxide, Dolomite rock meal, bentonite, titan dioxide, isoaliphate, pine
oil and orange turpentine and a blend of the dry substances calcium,
zirconium/manganese.
Exterior coating format:
1. Sehestedt's Primer Oil Preventing Mold and
Blueing on dry, clean surface (wood moisture under 15%)
2. Fill holes and do fine spackling with
Sehestedt's Varnish Filler
3. Apply a base coat of Pre-Varnish, in exterior
areas mix 1:1 with White Varnish, 18 hours drying time
4. Sand
5. 1-2 thin coats of Sehestedt's White Varnish.
Allow each coat to dry for at least 24 hours and sand between the coats.
Stir well all varnishes before using.
Turn opened containers upside down for storage.
Transfer unused portion of product into smaller container .
Coverage: approx. 0.75/10m² for one undiluted
coat.
For
interior low impact surfaces a final coat of Sehestedt' Pre-Varnish can be applied to
produce a matt finish. It will hold on most old coats having been well cleaned before
painting.

Sehestedt's White Varnish
A linseed oil standoil varnish with good
coverage quality for exterior application as doors, windows, garden furniture for a water
resistant, satiny gloss finish. Its high elasticity prevents hairline cracks and
brittleness. Dry to the touch, application of a second coat is possible within one
workday.
Varnish A white varnish with uncomplicated and
economical application as it used tobe known by former experts.
Ingredients: lacquer linseed oil, linseed
oil and woooil standoil, copal cooking, talcum, Dolomite rock meal, bentonite, titan
dioxide, isoaliphate, pine oil and a blend of the dry substances calcium and
cobalt/zirconium.
Standoil is the term for a fat oil
, as linseed oil or wood oil, having been heated for some time to approx . 200-300°C to
improve its technical qualities.
Coating format: as described with
Pre-Varnish
Coverage: approx. 0.75 l/10m² per coat.
For the above mentioned three coats a 2.5 l container is necessary for a surface of
approx. 10m".
For a matte finish: as all
real linseed oil/standoil varnishes Sehestedt's White Varnish will gradually turn matte.
Therefore no matt agents should be added. For a silky matt finish on interior surfaces a
blend of Pre-Varnish and some White Varnish can be applied.
