Care of wood, cork and open-pored stone floors

The protection and care of floor surfaces in the house is one of the most difficult tasks of cleaning technology.

During the last decades industry has sealed wood with two component varnishes. This type of varnish is very hard but not gas permeable. In case of water or chemicals penetrating through cracks in the varnish there is no way back and the wood discolors. After a time of wear the only solution is laborious sanding down.

An oil treatment ,however, keeps the floor breathing but the surface remains relatively soft. That is why Sehestedt's Natural Colors has added boiled down resin to the oil to harden the surface. Sehestedt's Hard Resin Oil has been a highly appreciated product for ten years now. From time to time the floor should be cleaned with soapy water and subsequently cared with Sehestedt's Care Oil.

The best environmentally friendly care of a floor is treating it subsequently with Floor Beeswax which requires at least one previous Hard Resin Oil coat. A wax coat, however, needs subsequent polishing which is another operation costing time and money and requiring an electric floor polisher for best results. Subsequent care consists of cleaning the floor with greasing soap (Sehestedt's Plant Soap Concentrate).

Some of Sehestedt's Polishing Milkcan be added to the last cleaning water. It is also possible to apply undiluted Polishing Milk after cleaning. This is particularly suitable for cork parquet that is to become glossier. It is,however, imperative to polish the floor with Floor Beeswax from time to time depending on how it is worn. For this purpose there is Sehestedt's Chitowax on water base.

Children's rooms, classrooms, bedrooms, offices will have an ecologically perfect atmosphere with a floor being treated in this way since it will be antistatic and no dust will be raised. Even schools apply this beeswax polishing method using an electric polishing machine. During the holidays the wood parquet floor is sanded down, scoured with steel wool to be polished again with Sehestedt's Chitowax.

If an electric polisher is not available and the floor has to be cleaned daily as in shops or doctors' practices it is advisable to work with Hard Resin Oil only and to give the floor a thin coat of Sehestedt's Care Oil after cleaning. We recommend to use Care Oil instead of beeswax for kitchen and bathroom floors.
